Chillicothe is Livingston County’s county seat at the crossroads of U.S. 36 and U.S. 65. Its estimated population is 9,114. Its downtown murals, local restaurants, shops, and museums make it a regional gathering place. Parks and outdoor recreation add other ways to spend time in the area, while the courthouse square and historic downtown connect visitors with the community’s past. The annual Chautauqua in the Park fills Simpson Park with arts, crafts, music, and food, creating a well-known fall gathering for residents and visitors.
On July 7, 1928, the Chillicothe Baking Company introduced commercially sliced bread. The former bakery at First and Elm now houses the town’s visitor center and celebrates this story. The Sliced Bread Innovation Center and local events keep that unusual contribution to everyday life in public view.
